UK Factory Buyers: Compare Chinese Compressors at Your Actual Air Demand

Build a comparable China compressor RFQ using measured air demand, package power, part-load evidence and UK electricity-cost assumptions for 2027 planning.

Published 4 November 2026 · SUNTC Group · Practical buyer guidance

For UK manufacturing maintenance and purchasing teams. Facts checked 3 November 2026. A low purchase price can hide a costly mismatch between a compressor and the hours your factory spends at reduced demand. Before requesting quotations from China, prepare a demand profile and require each supplier to price the same operating duty.

What changes in the UK cost calculation?

HMRC's published Climate Change Levy table lists the main electricity rate as £0.00801 per kWh from 1 April 2026 and £0.00827 from 1 April 2027. The latter is a published future rate at this review date, not a new November announcement. Reduced rates and exemptions can change what your business actually pays. Have your energy supplier confirm the treatment on your contract; these figures are not your complete electricity tariff.

For a 2027 capital decision, use your contracted business electricity prices and the levy that actually applies. Split calculations across tariff or levy changes where necessary. Do not add the levy twice if it is already included in your cost input. The small levy change is a reason to refresh assumptions, not evidence that a particular machine will save money.

Measure the demand before setting the machine size

Collect representative production, reduced-production and non-production periods. Record delivered air flow, pressure at the points that matter, electrical input and operating hours together. Have a competent compressed-air specialist identify leaks and pressure losses before treating the current consumption as an unavoidable requirement. Keep any forecast production expansion separate from measured demand.

Give bidders a short duty schedule: required flow and pressure, hours in each demand band, minimum and peak demand, air-quality requirement, ambient conditions, available electrical supply and existing compressors to be retained. State whether the new machine is intended to carry steady demand or respond to changing demand. Explain the consequences of an outage and whether backup capacity is required.

Make China quotations describe the same package

A supplier may offer a compressor alone, while another includes a dryer, receiver, filters or controls. Ask each bidder to identify the legal seller, package assembler and the maker and model of major bought-in components. Do not assume the name on a trading quotation is the maker of every component. This is a verification question for the specific offer, not a claim that all Chinese suppliers follow one business model.

  • Output: request delivered-air capacity at the specified discharge pressure, with the reference conditions and test method stated.
  • Power: request total package electrical input, explaining which fans, dryers and other auxiliaries are included. Motor nameplate power alone is not an operating-cost comparison.
  • Reduced demand: ask for power and flow at the demand points in your schedule, including unloaded operation and the supported control range.
  • Controls: identify sequencing interfaces, remote access arrangements and any licence or commissioning costs. A variable-speed label does not establish the best system choice.
  • Scope: list air treatment, pressure losses, drain arrangements, installation work, commissioning and training as included, excluded or provisional.

Manufacturer guidance on compressor purchasing distinguishes motor size from system efficiency. Compare performance evidence at a common pressure and with a common package boundary; an attractive efficiency figure measured under different conditions is not a like-for-like result.

Use a transparent annual-cost worksheet

For each demand band, multiply the expected package input in kW by its annual hours. Add the bands to estimate annual kWh, then apply the relevant electricity-cost assumption. List maintenance, consumables, commissioning, freight, installation and downtime provisions separately. Keep import and equipment-compliance review as separate purchase gates; a favourable energy calculation does not establish UK compliance.

Hypothetical arithmetic example, not a supplier claim: package A uses 50 kW for 2,000 hours and 30 kW for another 2,000 hours: 160,000 kWh. Package B uses 48 kW and 24 kW for the same respective hours: 144,000 kWh. At an assumed comparable variable electricity cost of £0.20/kWh, including any applicable levy once, the difference is £3,200 per year. If B costs £8,000 more installed, the simple energy-only payback is 2.5 years. These invented inputs exclude financing, maintenance differences and downtime; replace all of them with evidence from your factory and offers.

Run a second case with fewer operating hours and a third with different electricity prices. A purchase that only works under the most optimistic case needs a clearer justification. Do not use full-load efficiency to predict all reduced-load hours.

Put acceptance evidence before the balance-payment decision

Before placing the order

Agree the exact model and package boundary, performance points, test conditions, evidence format and who witnesses or reviews the results. Require written approval for component substitutions. Ask whether quoted performance is measured, independently verified or calculated, and obtain the underlying model-specific record rather than a generic brochure.

Before shipment

Reconcile the serial-number list and component schedule with the order. Review the agreed performance results, manuals, electrical drawings, consumable list and commissioning requirements. Where the supplier cannot reproduce the site's duty in a factory test, document that limitation and agree how site acceptance will be assessed. Do not describe an unloaded demonstration video as proof of energy performance.

After installation

Record an agreed baseline under representative production conditions. Compare actual pressure, flow, input power and operating hours with the purchase assumptions. Investigate differences in demand or system settings before attributing every difference to the compressor. Keep warranty claims and acceptance procedures tied to the written contract.

Decide who will support the equipment in the UK

Ask the proposed service provider about response arrangements, technician access, diagnostic tools and stocked consumables before ordering. Request lead times and prices for the actual installed components. Identify which work can be performed locally and which requires supplier assistance. A low factory price is difficult to evaluate when the first service or replacement-control arrangement remains unknown.

Factory-direct sourcing can suit a buyer with a clear technical brief, an established manufacturer and UK commissioning capability. Procurement coordination can help when the package combines several suppliers or when test records, components and export documents need to be reconciled. Shanghai Suntc Group Co., Ltd. can discuss China sourcing, supplier coordination and export support; technical acceptance and UK installation decisions still need the buyer's qualified specialists.

Buyer questions

Can I compare compressors by motor kilowatts?

Motor size alone does not show the electrical input needed to supply your required air. Request comparable package power and flow at the same pressure and demand points.

Should every factory choose a variable-speed compressor?

No. Match the control arrangement to measured demand, the existing system and evidence across the required operating range.

Is the 2027 levy the complete electricity price?

No. Confirm your business tariff and applicable levy treatment with your energy supplier, and avoid counting a levy twice in the cost worksheet.
